The recent speech by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, highlighted plans for a National Youth Conference, organized by the Executive Council, House of Representatives, and Senate. As a foundation advocating for multiple birth families, we see this as a crucial moment to bring our vision into the national spotlight. We believe that multiple births and their families deserve inclusion in this dialogue, given the unique challenges they face and their untapped potential.
Our organization is spearheading the first-ever Twins and Multiple Birth Limpic (Tamblimpic), slated for March 2025, in honor of Mary Slessor, the Scottish woman who courageously stopped the killing of twins in Nigeria in the 19th century. Tamblimpic is designed to celebrate and empower families with multiple births in Nigeria, Africa, and the world. It’s more than a sports festival – it’s a platform to give these families a voice. We foresee this event evolving into an Olympic-level competition, providing global recognition for the talents of multiple births.
Nigeria’s leadership needs to accommodate and support multiple birth families. Our foundation seeks involvement in the upcoming National Youth Conference, as our Tamblimpic vision is youth-oriented, addressing key challenges and offering recommendations that will shape a better future for these families. After all, these children are part of the nation’s future leadership.
In this regard, we must also celebrate notable figures from the multiple birth community, who serve as sources of inspiration:
Dr. Awele Elumelu, wife of philanthropist Tony Elumelu, not only champions health reforms in Nigeria but is also a proud mother of a set of twins and triplets. In addition to her role as a mother, she has participated in and completed several marathons, demonstrating remarkable endurance and determination.
PSquare, Nigeria’s famous musical duo, are themselves twins.Paul Okoye, one half of the duo, is also a father of twins, reflecting the strength of family bonds that run through the multiple birth communities.
John Mikel Obi, the celebrated footballer, is a twin who has also fathered twins. His success story continues to inspire countless Nigerians, especially within the multiple-birth community.
These remarkable individuals embody the resilience and success that can be achieved, and they align perfectly with the mission of the Chukwudumebi-Twins Foundation.
As we move toward the National Youth Conference, we believe that this is the time for Nigeria’s leadership to support Tamblimpic and multiple birth families.
